July 03

India saw the launch of 27 phones and tablets in June

27 devices were unveiled by the handset and tablet manufactures for Indian consumers. Out of which 21 were Smartphone’s, four were tablets and two were feature phones. The price range of all these Smartphone’s were from Rs 5,000 and Rs 1.5 lakh. All 21 Smartphone’s were launched last month both from MNC brands and Indian brands. The major trend we observed was that new Smartphone’s outnumbered feature phones. The main reason behind this might be MNC brands like Sony, Motorola and HTC have already stated that they will exit the feature phone business and concentrate only on Smartphone’s. But the unexpected part is that even homegrown brands are no longer focusing on the feature phone segment. Eight feature phones were announced in the month of May but this number decreased to just two in June. Even the price of basic Smartphone’s is almost same as features phones and moreover the first time buyers' market is fast dwindling. Customers are also looking for the upgrades which results into shrinkage of feature phone market.

LG puts tablets on hold, focusing on Smartphone’s

LG delaying its tablet development is concentrating on Smartphone’s as Android tablets are finding it hard these days to compete with powerful iPad. It has been stated by LG spokesman Ken Hong that they have decided to put all new tablet development on the back burner for the time being in order to focus more on Smartphone’s. LG was the first one to jump on the Android tablet waggon with its 3D-enabled 8.9-inch Optimus Pad also known as the T-Mobile G-Slate.  It has been reported that 3D hype didn't seem to impress users but still the LG launched an updgraded Optimus Pad LTE tablet earlier this year. This announcement was made soon after Microsoft lifts the cover off its Surface tablets.  LG also stated that the upcoming Surface tablets are allegedly not "competing with anything we’re focusing on at the moment”.  LG's changed focus on Smartphone’s is definitely something that the company needs. Its current range of devices include Optimus 4X on the high-end and the L series for the mid and low tier.

Microsoft to unveil new Windows RT tablets

Microsoft, software giant is finally ready to compete with the Apple iPad tablet. Microsoft has scheduled an event for a major announcement today in Los Angeles, USA. It has been reported that Microsoft will be launching Windows RT (Windows on ARM) running tablets at a special event in Los Angeles, USA. This Tablet has been self designed by the company on both fronts - software and hardware. Microsoft has not given any comments about the Windows 8 and Windows RT development. During Computex 2012 event Asus, Acer and other companies have shown the Windows RT based tablets but Microsoft has different agenda.
They aspire to take a big bite of Apple iPad's tablet market pie with the self designed hardware and software loaded Windows RT tablets. At this point of time it is very hard to state how different these Microsoft branded tablets could be from the ones already announced by different PC makers. In the coming week Google along with Asus is expected to announce the Nexus tablet. With the new breed of affordable tablets on Android operating system, Microsoft also will be forced to offer affordable tablets of similar specifications. We shall get to see more affordable tablets running Android OS and new lineup of tablets running Windows RT by second half of this year. Till now pricing and country wise availability of the tablets are not available.
