Stay safe, stay smart

Android is a safe and secure operating system and works like other software program. This software does what the user commands it to do. So if the user isn't alert then what can an operating system do? Only users are to be blamed for these security issues but the whole world is pointing fingers at Google for not strengthening the security of Android and its application store. Google has employed a new program codenamed Bouncer to make Android Market safer for users. As its name suggests, the program scouts Android Market and scans applications for viruses, trojans and even suspicious behavior and helps in eliminating these applications.
As an operating system Google Android relies on the user's permission to allow any application to access data inside the device. Else the applications run in their own separate environments without affecting other users or even applications.

Apple temporarily shuts over-the-phone password reset service

The maker of iPhone and iPad, Apple has temporarily suspended the password rest facility from mobile devices. Therefore users now have to visit the iForgot web page to reset their passwords.
According to Apple, this additional security measure has been taken to improve the overall security of their systems and that users have to bear the procedure for 24 hours. As stated by Apple "We've temporarily suspended the ability to reset AppleID passwords over the phone. We're asking customers who need to reset their passwords to continue to use our online iForgot system (iforgot.apple.com)”.
Apple took this step after a journalist reported that his Apple account was hacked by a hacker who reset his password after calling Apple's support line.  The hack was successful and very much devastating for him who’s Mac, iPhone, and iPad were remotely wiped, along with his Gmail and everything else linked to the Apple ID.
Apple stated in regard to security breach   "Apple takes customer privacy seriously and requires multiple forms of verification before resetting an Apple ID password. In this particular case, the customer's data was compromised by a person who had acquired personal information about the customer. In addition, we found that our own internal policies were not followed completely. We are reviewing all of our processes for resetting account passwords to ensure our customers' data is protected."

Dropbox accounts hacked, security upped

August 02
by Jashan 2. August 2012 15:46

Dropbox, popular cloud storage service provider has acknowledged that the security of some of its user’s accounts was compromised. Some of the users were receiving spam emails from hackers who managed to get their hands on the account details of users of these compromised accounts. The matter was taken into consideration when some of the Dropbox users started receiving spam mails on their email accounts associated with their Dropbox account. The cloud storage service provider tried to investigate the case and took some time to find out the root cause of the issue. They tried to fix it by helping the users improve their accounts' security.
Through their official blog Dropbox has apologized to the users about the security breach. They stted on their blog that our investigation found that usernames and passwords recently stolen from other websites were used to sign in to a small number of Dropbox accounts. We've contacted these users and have helped them protect their accounts. They further added that the reason for the breach in security is not due to the lack of security in the Dropbox software but at the company's end. A stolen password was also used to access an employee's Dropbox account containing a project document with users' email addresses. They believed that this improper access is what led to the spam. They have put additional controls in place to help make sure it doesn't happen again.
New measures will be employed by the Dropbox to ensure that nothing of this sort happens to the users in future. In the coming weeks Dropbox will be using a two-factor authentication process. Two proofs of identity such as their password and a temporary code sent to their phone when signing in will be required by users. This feature is optional for the users. Another feature has been added that allow users to examine all active logins to your account, thereby informing them about any suspicious activity happening with their account with help of new page.

Hackers find hole in NFC, Chrome browser for Android

July 31
by jasmeet 31. July 2012 16:14

Google has been trying hard to make android mobile operating more secure than ever with new updates. The hackers continue to stay one step ahead and now claim to have found a new loop hole. Several security researchers in the Black Hat hacker conference that took place at Las Vegas showcased the proof of concept methods to exploit loopholes in different software.  Black Hat hackers manage to inject malicious code in the Google Android mobile operating system by exploiting the bug in Near Field Communication module and Chrome browser.
This is a very serious bug considering that several financial, banking and other business institutions are looking forward to use the NFC for mobile payments. If the technology has some ambiguity then there may be slow down in the implementation process.
Miller along with another security researcher also demonstrated a loop hole in the Chrome which could be exploited to take control of the device. Theses researchers confirmed that fix has already been issued by Google for the Chrome mobile web browser for the Android devices. With the latest version of the app for Android the Chrome browser bug has been fixed and can be downloaded from the Google Play store.
Google has been very active in filling up the gaps and not leaving any security slip-ups with its Android mobile operating system. New "Bouncer" Technology has also been employed for reviewing and testing the apps submitted for approval and to be published through the Google Play Store. Like other operating systems, Android OS is also not faultless but it can be made by patching the loopholes as quickly as possible.
