Bharti Infratel, Viom Networks, Indus Towers- telecom tower providers are planning to lessen their operating costs by focusing towards green power. It sounds interesting that the companies have proposed for setting up independent renewable energy companies that will generate and supply green power to run towers. Mostly they run on electricity or diesel but with this new proposal they will run on self sustaining energy sources. This is in turn will drastically reduce the costs.
About 60% of India's 400,000 telecom towers depend on diesel generators and consume about 2 billion litres of it every year due to irregular power supply in the country. According to the regulator they had to reduce dependency on diesel and cut carbon emissions by running at least 50% of all rural towers and 20% of the urban towers on hybrid power by 2015. Taipa, the company behind tower infrastructure providers across the country is working on this proposal. In country like India renewable sources of energy are crucial in almost all sectors including telecom. So this will be beneficial for them.
