by Kulbir Kaur 23. May 2013 17:30

Dubbler officially launches today for iOS and Android while signing up 500,000 users during its open testing since the beginning of the year. Users record a message for up to 60 seconds, filter it if they want, and zap it off to a social network like Twitter, Facebook or Tumblr. They can even leave the message on the site for the Dubblr community to hear. For those shy or with something that they don't want everyone to hear, a private, direct message can be sent.

Also, Dubbler enables you can snap a picture to use as a lander for your clip and you can use hash tags in the same way you would on Instagram or Twitter. However, the app's ToS prevent sexual content. So far, about 50% of Dubbler's messages have remained on the site while the remaining gets sent off to a social networking site.

Dubbler doesn't have a deep pocketed social networking related parent like Vine.  So, it is open to being copied. It is hoped that the Dubbler, instead of fighting off copy-cats, ends up partnering with other apps like Instagram and Twitter.

Google has been thinking about more granular permissions control on Android

May 21
by Kulbir Kaur 21. May 2013 17:30

It is really nice that Android allows you to see everything on your device that an app will have access to in the permissions but it can get annoying that it is an all-or-nothing choice. For instance, you may love the Amazon app, but you don't see any reason why the app should need to access your WiFi/GPS location data.  However, there is no way to deny that one permission and still use the app, but Google may be thinking about changing that.

Google software engineer Dianne Hackborn admitted that the Android team has thought about that exact issue and has also considered changing the permissions model to give users more granular control. This would enable you to pick and choose which permissions to accept & which to deny. Since there are no concrete plans to implement such a system anytime soon, it is all just a hypothetical possibility.

May 15
by Munish 15. May 2013 18:30

Blackberry startled everyone with an unexpected announcement. Blackberry CEO, Thorsten Heins, formally declared that their much talked messaging service, the Blackberry Messenger (BBM) will be coming to iOS and Android this summer.  As per Blackberry CEO, “It is a state of confidence. The BB10 platform is so strong and the response has been so good that the time is right for BBM to become an independent mobile messaging platform.” The Android version of BBM would be compatible with version 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) but would support iOS hardware running iOS 6. The introduction of BBM on the dominant mobile OS would provide an opportunity to Android and iOS users to interact with the 60 million BBM users. This announcement is good news for people with friends still using Blackberry devices.  Some claim that Blackberry’s move is too late with Whatsapp’s dominance while others just claim that this is yet another reason not to buy a Blackberry.
