Telecom operator's ARPU on the rise

Indian telecom service provider known for offering the cheapest call rates in the world is always complaining about low revenue from subscribers. But now the things are changing. According to the latest reports of TRAI, the decreasing ARPU (average revenue per user) has for the first time shown a rising trend. In GSM service providers there has been an increase of Re 1 in the ARPU and for CDMA operators it increased by 14.54 per cent year on year. The increase seems to be reflected because operators started to remove inactive customers from their books more aggressively. The active subscriber was only 72.36 per cent in December which corresponds with the rise in ARPU.
In the last quarter of 2011 the ARPU of GSM operators was Rs 96 but it went up to went up to Rs 97 in the March 2012. There is a decrease of 2.71 per cent in ARPU. In March 2012 TRAI has reported a rise in minutes of usage, with a 4.09 per cent rise from 346 minutes as compared to 332 minutes in December 2011. Outgoing calls increased by 3.98 per cent and incoming increased by 4.20 per cent in this period.
From the last one year CDMA operators have experienced much better than GSM operators with a 14.54 per cent increase in ARPU.  In December CDMA ARPU was only Rs 73 but in March 2012 it went up to Rs 75 which is an increase of 2.49 per cent.
The percentage of inactive customers was much higher with CDMA operators. In March 2012 there was a decline of 2.77 million in the CDMA subscriber base because of  removal of inactive subscribers from the books .From December to March  this reduction of  inactive subscriber base  led to an increase in average minutes of usage by 1.62 per cent from 226 to 229 minutes. Another reason for the rise in ARPU can be attributed to the 20 per cent tariff hike by operators across the board. This does not explain the rise in average minutes of usage, which is best explained by the fact that a removal of inactive users meant fewer users with zero spend, and therefore fewer to lower the average usage figures.

TRAI Will Ask For Ban On Imported Mobiles With Fake IMEI Codes

TRAI Will Ask For Ban On Imported Mobiles With Fake IMEI Codes

According to the latest reports TRAI has decided to write to the commerce ministry to ban the import of mobile phones with fake IMEI numbers. IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number is a unique identification code embedded in each telecommunications device including tablets it support voice calls, as well as some satellite phones. With the help of this number mobile operators can identify individual devices, track the stolen phone and block it from the network even if the SIM card is replaced. This acts as a preventive tool to thieves for whom the stolen device is of no use.
Multiple phones with the same IMEI number could cause lots of problems, especially if one of them has been used for an illegal activity. Mobile phones with fake IMEIs are likely to be used by gangsters and terrorists and it is very difficult to track this devices. As stated by telecom official "TRAI will soon write to the Commerce Ministry to ban such phones. Import of only those cell phones should be allowed which are certified by GSMA and TIA authorized bodies for GSM and CDMA handsets respectively".
When the government banned handsets in 2009 without IMEI numbers at that time the incidence of fake IMEI numbers increased. It would seem that in an effort to avoid the ban, manufacturers of such phones have resorted to use cloned IMEIs instead. This step to ban the fake IMEI numbers may create problems for terrorists, who import these phones while importing themselves across the border. This step of banning these devices should have been taken a long time ago.

After Google Maps, YouTube also leaves iOS 6

Due to the adoption of Apple's very own homegrown maps in the upcoming iOS6, Apple disclosed that it will be doing away with the Google Maps. But following the release of the iOS 6 beta to the developers, it has been seen that not just Google Maps but the YouTube application that was always present there for iOS will also be missing from the final version of the operating system. The reason Apple has cited for this is the "expiration of license with Google". As stated by Apple, the iPhone maker "Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended, customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store." These benefits will be available to the older devices running the iOS 5 but it will not be available on iOS 6.
Soon after the launch Apple iOS 6 users will be getting the YouTube services as a part of the standalone application that will be made available for the users. As stated by Google "We are working with Apple to ensure we have the best possible YouTube experience for iOS users."
