Only 4.9 per cent mobile users in India have used MNP till date

In India Mobile Number Portability service was launched in January 2011 and till now only 4.9 per cent mobile subscribers has used this Mobile Number Portability (MNP) services. This service allows users to change their mobile service provider without changing their number. Out of 921 million mobile subscribers in India only 45.86 million users has used it so far. Most of the people in India prefers to buy a new SIM instead of waiting for the MNP procedure , which takes about seven days. This is the main reason for the pre-paid market like India where people are not loyal about their Mobile Number. The figure of MNP jumps to 6.7 per cent if we consider MNP requests of only active mobile subscribers in the country, which is 686.56 million . This service has gained popularity in the month of April this year where 4.01 million subscribers availed the service. When MNP was presented in 2011 most of the industry pundits stated that only 20 per cent people will choose this service . they also predicted that some operators like Tata Docomo and RCom would gain through this service while Idea Cellular would lose and Airtel would remain unaffected.None of the predictions came true . According to the latest report of the TRAI Idea Cellular is the biggest gainer and Airtel gained marginally while Tata Docomo, RCom, and MTNL take a hit in retaining their subscribers. MNP services is expected to come with a new telecom policy, which mandates inter-circle .
