Facebook's new friends nearby feature: boon or bane?

Popular global social networking service giant Facebook has announced the launch of Facebook friend finder service for Facebook mobile application users. By using this feature Facebook mobile users can access people or fellow facebookers in their vicinity and can access their information, photographs and even send them friendship requests. Although it's a great new feature from the social networking giant, doesn't it raise a privacy concern? What will application engines like iTunes Store and Google Play do about this?
Recently a Russian iOS application developer, I-Free was penalized for its application Girls Around Me as it raised privacy and security concerns among many users across the world. The application used to provide information about the presence of girls or female users in the vicinity of anyone using the application, thereby allowing the two users to connect through services such as Facebook and Foursquare. After the issue of privacy was raised by many people, Foursquare, which is a popular social networking service, decided to stop sharing the data of its users with the developer.
Although Facebook friend finder service does not directly share information regarding female users within the vicinity, it somehow works on the same principles. Users can connect to strangers, check out their profiles, message them, and even browse their pictures through this service.

Five big things to expect from Google this week

Five big things to expect from Google this week

Google I/O conference will begin on June 27 and some major announcements are expected. Google's annual I/O conference begins this year on June 27 and will run up to June 29. Interestingly, it is happening at a time when Microsoft and Apple announce Windows 8 and iOS 6, respectively. While most of the news is already out in the form of rumours and expectations Google can really surprise us. For the time being though here is what the tech world expects Google to announce:

  • Android Jellybean 4.1: This is going to be the new version of Android operating system and it is expected to be an upgrade of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. As we reported earlier it is expected that while the recently released Android ICS is a one stop solution for smartphones as well as for tablets, the Jellybean update will focus on extending Android's capabilities further to netbooks and computers as well. This means that the new version will have better support for Intel's x86 processor architecture, and also better support for a physical keypad and mouse. Along with that Jellybean will get dual OS booting option and that too without the device having to be rebooted or restarted. Other changes will be more like simple design upgrades.
  • Google Nexus Phones: The next Nexus device is expected to run on Android 4.1 Jellybean. And as we reported earlier, it will not be just one device but up to five devices of the top Android manufacturers that will get a share of the pure Android experience. While these phones will be announced this week, their final arrival will take a couple of months. These phones will also be sold through Google Play (the Android store) as is the case with the current Nexus phone, but unlike the current phone which is sold through Google Play only in the USA, this phone will be available in more markets.
  • Google Nexus Tablet: It is widely known now that Google's first Nexus tablet will be manufactured by Asus, and that it will be a low cost tablet priced within $200 (Rs 11,000) with a 7 inch screen and Nvidia quad core processor. Asus officials have gone on record saying that the tablet will arrive this month. The Google-Asus Nexus tablet is expected to have a 7 inch touchscreen display with a quad core Nvidia Tegra 3 mobile processor and 1 GB RAM. The tablet will run on Android 4.1. Although not confirmed the tablet is expected to feature a 5 megapixel main camera along with a front facing camera for video calling. The tablet is expected to have 3G calling along with support for 4G networks for countries that have a 4G network.
  • Google Majel: It is expected that Google will release its own SIRI competitor with a product called Majel. Not much is known about the capabilities of this new voice assistant, but we expect it to have support for multiple languages, and multiple accents, apart from the ability to completely control the phone with voice alone. The new assistant is expected to come as an application and should run on Android 2.3 and beyond.
  • Google Project Glass: About a month or so ago Google announced its Project Glass, with the first video taken with its 'Project Glass' techno-glasses: hi-tech specs that 'layer' computer information over worldly information. The expectations are that tech journalists will get to see the first prototype of the project. The technology behind this project - augmented reality, is already being used by smartphones and digital cameras. Augmented reality is a technology that combines the real world with information gathered from computer generated data like GPS, graphics etc. According to Google the special glasses will comprise a transparent display that can be worn by users and it will come with functionality like voice commands, camera and even GPS for location awareness. By connecting the glasses to a smartphone, users can also make calls, click pictures, send messages, and do many other tasks they usually use their phone for. Come to think of it, project Majel will be a good blend for this technology. Apart from these announcements Google is also likely to announce a new cloud based storage and application service. Also on the cards are certain changes to the Map service, and then there are certain announcements that will be a complete surprise. So for details of the announcement and to know about the surprises, keep visiting our site.

Next gen iPhone might arrive with built in NFC

Next gen iPhone might arrive with built in NFC

Till now we know that the new and upcoming iPhone will have a larger 4 inch display and that the shape and design might just be pretty much the same. Well today there is some more development as sources are claiming that the new iPhone will come with NFC connectivity. 9to5Mac says that they have been investigating on the new iPhone prototypes and some hardware code dump says that these prototypes have Near Field Communication (NFC) controllers directly connected to the power management unit (PMU).
Now this is pretty interesting and it is a strong possibility that we might see this feature arrive on the iPhone as Apple announced the iOS 6 with the new Passbook application. So NFC seems to be the best connectivity option that this app might be using. Also this can mean that iPhone users will finally be able to share files via NFC. Jim Peters, CTO of SITA, says that NFC is coming to the iPhone. He said, Opinion is that Apple is going to incorporate NFC into Passbook. Apple just thinks about how they can make it really easy for the user, and then they figure out how to monetise it. They don’t think about how to monetise it and then tell the user what they can have. It doesn’t work like that. There aren’t any transactions in it yet, but I think that’s how Apple is going to sneak up on the industry. They are going to get people used to using it and then all of a sudden they will allow credit cards to be used in there, on the next iPhone, which will include NFC. There is a lot of debate that NFC will never take off because of all the arguments. But you need to get ready, this is coming. This is going to happen. By the end of the year the majority of smartphones that you go and buy will have NFC on them. If in October the next iPhone comes out and it has NFC on it, it’s game over.

Gmail app for iOS finally gets push notifications, persistent logins

Gmail app for iOS finally gets push notifications, persistent logins

Google has now (finally!) updated its iOS Gmail application to add push support, which simply means that you get full message excerpts notifying you about new and unread email in real time. The new Gmail app updates appear directly in your Notification Center. Also, you get banners, alerts and lock screen notifications when you get new mail. Google has also fixed the login process, so you don’t have to type in your credentials every once in a while, when your session expires, but instead you get to be persistently logged in.
As long as you’ve got another Gmail account set up, the app now allows sending email from it, but we’d still wish for multiple account support and a more native feel to the app. Still, Gmail for iOS has come a long way and it’s definitely worth checking out.
